Did you know chemical peels are our third most requested treatment?
Chemical peels have become the third most requested service next to botox and filler treatments in recent years, and for good reason. This procedure can improve the appearance of your skin by removing dead skin cells and promoting the growth of new, healthy cells. If you struggle with scaring, pigmentation or uneven skin tone and texture and are considering getting a chemical peel, here’s everything you need to know about this skincare treatment.
What is a chemical peel -
A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment that involves applying a solution to the skin to exfoliate the top layers of dead skin cells. This process stimulates the growth of new skin cells, which can lead to smoother, brighter skin and push out unwanted pigmentation. Chemical peels can be used to treat a variety of skin concerns, including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation.
There are three main types of chemical peels: superficial, medium, and deep. Superficial peels are the mildest and only penetrate the outermost layer of skin, while medium and deep peels reach deeper layers of the skin. The type of peel that is best for you will depend on your skin type and desired results.
What to expect during a chemical peel -
During a chemical peel, your skincare provider will cleanse your skin and apply the chemical solution evenly across your face. You may feel a mild tingling or spicy sensation as the solution is applied, but this is usually temporary. After each layer is applied, your medical aesthetician will gauge your comfortability from 1-10 to make sure you’re getting a safe, yet effective treatment. Our PCA chemical peels release over several hours to avoid harsh irritation to the skin. The day of your treatment it is important to not get your face wet as the peel solution will reactive with water. PCA peels are self neutralizing, meaning they aren’t removed and it is recommended to sleep in your peel the same night. Because the peel reactivates with water, heavy exercise, saunas or baths are to be avoided until your skin is back to normal. For 1-7 days after your peel, your skin may appear flushed and flaky as the old skin cells slough off and new skin cells are revealed. If you are being treated for hyperpigmentation, it is expected that some of the underlying pigment will become darker until it eventually lightens up and exfoliates off. To help avoid this and future hyperpigmentation from happening, your medical aesthetician may recommend using a tyrosinase inhibitor before, during and after your peel series. Tyrosinase is what turns bananas brown and sparks melanin production in our skin.
It’s important to follow your medical aesthetician’s instructions for post-treatment care, which may include avoiding sun exposure, using gentle skincare products from the PCA peel line, and applying moisturizer regularly. It’s also important to wear sunscreen every day to protect your skin from further damage.
