Kybella® is a cosmetic treatment used to reduce fat. It is an FDA approved injectable treatment commonly used for the double chin, also known as submental fat. This non-surgical fat reduction treatment involves injecting a substance called deoxycholic acid into the fat beneath the skin. This acid helps destroy fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body over time. Kybella® can help people reduce unwanted fat in specific areas and improve their overall appearance.
What is a Double Chin?
A double chin is a term used to describe extra fat that gathers under the chin, making it look like there's a second chin. It's also called submental fat. A double chin can happen when there's too much fat in that area or when the skin loses its elasticity, causing it to sag.
People of all ages and body types can develop a double chin. Factors like genetics, weight gain, and aging can contribute to its formation. While it's not harmful to your health, some people may feel self-conscious about their double chin and may seek treatments for chin fat removal.
What Other Areas Can Kybella® Treat?
Kybella® treatment isn't just for reducing double chins. It can also treat other areas of unwanted fat on the body. This includes areas like the jowls, which are the lower cheeks and jawline, as well as the bra line or armpit fat. Kybella® works by targeting and breaking down fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body. The areas that clients in our clinic most commonly treat are:
Double chin
Underarms
Hips
Who is Fat Reduction Treatment for?
Fat reduction treatments are for anyone who wants to improve their appearance by reducing excess fat in specific areas of their body. People bothered by stubborn pockets of fat that don't respond to diet and exercise may consider Kybella® injections. This is a minimally invasive procedure that is safe and effective.
It's important for individuals to have realistic expectations and be in generally good health before undergoing fat reduction procedures. While Kybella® can be beneficial for many, it's essential to book a consultation with us to determine if this is a suitable cosmetic treatment for you based on your individual needs and medical history.
How Many Kybella® Treatments Will I Need?
The number of Kybella® treatments you'll need can vary depending on factors like the amount of fat to be dissolved and your desired results. Typically, individuals will achieve optimal results with multiple treatments.
Most people undergo a series of two to four treatments, spaced about a month apart. During each session, we will inject Kybella® into the fat you want to remove. Over time, the fat cells will gradually break down and be naturally eliminated by your body.
We will assess your progress after each treatment session and recommend additional sessions if needed to achieve your desired outcome.
Kybella® Before and After Care
This is not a good treatment if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have open sores in the treatment area. Please contact us to reschedule your appointment.
Before getting Kybella® treatment
Let us know about any medical conditions or allergies you have.
Avoid using harsh scrub, exfoliators, bleaching creams or any products with RetinA, retinoids, or similar vitamin A compounds
Shave the treatment area if applicable.
Don’t apply creams, lotions, makeup, or perfumes to the treatment area.
Avoid taking medications and supplements with a blood thinning affect about 2 weeks before treatment. Aspirin, Vitamin E, Gingko Biloba, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil Supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and other NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections. Please consult with your primary care physician prior to discontinuing any of these medications.
Do NOT consume alcoholic beverages 1 week prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising).
Avoid caffeine, Niacin supplements and cigarettes 24-48 hours before your treatment.
After Fat Reduction Treatment
After the treatment, you may experience swelling, bruising, or numbness in the treated area. Swelling is the main side effect of Kybella® and should reduce within one to two weeks with a total recovery time of one month. Applying ice packs and avoiding strenuous activities can help reduce swelling and discomfort.
You should also:
Avoid saunas, jacuzzis, steam rooms, hot showers and any extreme heat areas.
Don’t consume alcohol or sodium for 3 days post treatment.
Avoid strenuous exercise and wearing makeup for 24 hours.
Avoid caffeine, Niacin supplements and cigarettes 24-48 hours after your treatment.
Avoid manipulating or massaging the area for 14 days following treatment.
For chin fat removal, sleep on your back with your head elevated.
We recommend waiting at least 2 weeks after Kybella® before getting any other cosmetic procedure in the area, including laser, peels, facials, micro needling, microdermabrasion, etc.
If you have any concerns or experience unusual side effects, or are having trouble swallowing, be sure to contact us for guidance and support.
